California - point in time 2023

  

  • Homelessness in California totaled 181,399 persons in 2023
  •  28% of the nation’s total homeless population is in California.  40% increase from five years ago.  
  • White homeless totaled 53% or 96.385 persons.
  • Black homeless totaled 28% or 53,369 persons.
  • 14,833  youth aged under 18 are homeless.
  • 11,401 are veterans that served our Country.
  • Greatest contributor to homeless population is loss of a job.

  • Homelessness in Sacramento decreased by 29% since 2022.  (sacramentostepsforward)
  • A whopping 50.9 in every 10,000 people experience homelessness.
  • Unsheltered homeless population decreased to 3,944, down 41% since 2022. 
  • 72% of all homeless are unsheltered.
  • Sheltered homelessness increased 2% since 2022.

Sheltered versus Unsheltered

  •  6,615 people were estimated to be experiencing homelessness during the 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, a 28.7% decrease from the 2022 PIT Count.  
  • About 16.7% of those experiencing homelessness were in households that included minor children. 
  • Most people were over 24 (83.3%), while 6.6% were between 18 and 24 and 10.1% were under 18. 
  • There were nearly double the number of males in the PIT Count population compared to females; 5.0% were gender nonconforming individuals. 
  • 548 veterans identified. That's 8.3% of the PIT Count population. 
  • Approximately 44.8% of the people counted were identified as being chronically homeless.

  • 90% had been Sacramento County residents for more than six months, with 62% either originating from or being lifelong residents. 
  • 74% had to move and find a new sleeping location within the last two months. 
  • 68% had been experiencing homelessness for at least two years. 58% believed the number one thing that our region could do to better to help them was increase affordable housing. 
  • 50% were experiencing homelessness for the first time. 
  • 25% had been placed in foster or group homes before turning 18.
